Reincarnation (Short Film)

Director - Gaurav Bakshi

Producer – Mohit Rastogi

Cast – Sumit Raghavan

Reincarnation was the best short film screened at PIFF 2011. The film was simple and easy to understand unlike the other artistic short films. It’s based on the concept of rebirth and the personality involved is none other than Mahatma Gandhi.

The protagonist Siddharth (Sumit Raghavan) has been dreaming about the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi for almost 2 years. He sees three bullets being fired at Gandhiji on the 30th of January 1948. This dream is troubling his personal and professional life. His mother advises him to visit a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist concludes that Gandhiji has taken rebirth in the form of Siddharth. The news spreads like wildfire. Siddharth decides to take advantage of the situation and begins to act like the Mahatma. He begins to give lectures about truth and non violence in his locality. The dream even actually stops. Soon there is a rush at his house to “catch the glimpse of the Mahatma”. His followers increase as the days go by. One fine day the Prime Minister of Pakistan visits him and invites him to Pakistan. Siddharth accepts it but is worried about his future as Gandhiji was assassinated just days before he was to leave for Pakistan. That night the dream haunts him again. This time the dream is extended. He sees himself firing the bullets at Gandhiji. (As such he’s the reincarnation of Nathuram Godse and not Mahatma Gandhi). The film ends there.

The film got a loud applause from the audience. The twist at the end was unexpected. You could see happy faces in the crowd. It was a delight to watch this film at PIFF. I go with four and a half stars out of five for Gaurav Bakshi’s ‘Reincarnation’. It’s a simple story with a hilarious climax.
